Firm History

For over 40 years Henderson Reeves has been at the forefront of providing legal services in Northland, and more recently Auckland, offering a wide range of legal expertise and unsurpassed service.

Although the firm was established in the early 1970s, it was 1981 when Stuart Henderson and Ian Reeves became partners, and Henderson Reeves grew rapidly under their leadership. As a result of this growth, in 1992 the firm moved from offices in Mansfield Terrace to larger premises on the top floor of the State Insurance building, and acquired the practice of Peter Mahood.

Building on a strong reputation for excellent service, Henderson Reeves continued to expand. In 2001 the firm was renamed Henderson Reeves Connell Rishworth with the acquisition of Connell Rishworth, together with Lynch and Atkins. two respected and longstanding Whangārei law firms. This expansion saw the firm taking over a further two floors of the now Henderson Reeves building on Bank Street, Whangārei.

In 2008, commercial law specialist Thomas Biss joined Stuart and Ian in partnership, and in 2010 the firm incorporated and became a company. Litigator Jeremy Browne became a Director in 2012, and in 2015, Jamie Bourke became the firm’s first female Director, followed by Amanda Morgan in 2018.

In 2016, Henderson Reeves began offering an innovative mobile legal service using electric vehicles in Auckland, and soon after opened an office in firstly in Avondale to meet growing demand.  Founding Auckland lawyers Shelley Funnell and Taina Henderson became Directors in 2022.

Flexible working practices and a commitment to sustainability are a big part of the firm’s ethos. The staff at Henderson Reeves enjoy a great work-life balance, while staying relevant to the ever-changing needs of clients. By 2020, an original staff of six had grown to a team of 70.

Today, Henderson Reeves is one of the leading law firms in the North, giving peace of mind to individuals, families and businesses in Northland, Auckland and beyond.
